Carbohydrates in the Cell membrane

Carbohydrates are the third major component of plasma membranes. In general, they are found on the outside surface of cells and are bound either to proteins (forming glycoproteins) or to lipids (forming glycolipids). Carbohydrates on the cell membranes are usually oligosaccharides that enable cell to recognize other cells as either body cells or other, possibly dangerous cells, that should be attacked.
