What is Cell wall?
Cell wall is a wall or structural layer surrounding the Cells. It is form of extracellular matrix that surrounds every cell of a plant. The cell wall is responsible for many of the characteristics that distinguish plant cells from animal cells.
Cell walls are present in most prokaryotes, algae, fungi and eukaryotes including plants but are absent in animals.
The cell wall is made up of a variety of different materials depending on the organism:
Bacteria –> Peptidoglycan
Fungi –> Chitin
Algae –> Glycoproteins
Plant –> Cellulose
Most cell walls are considered semi-permable, meaning that mostly small molecules and proteins can pass through the membrane to the cell’s core and interior.
