What’s a Relational Database?

A relational database is a type of database that stores and provides access to data points that are related to one another.

Databases are structured to facilitate the storage, retrieval, modification, and deletion of data in conjunction with various data-processing operations. A relational database consists of multiple tables containing columns and rows. The relationships among the tables are defined through the use of common columns, which establish links between them.

The most popular example of a relational database is Microsoft SQL Server. Other examples include MySQL, Oracle Database, Sybase, IBM DB2 and Access.
