What happens to the plastic waste which we throw away?

Answer: The plastic waste which we throw away ends up in landfills, oceans, and eventually, our food supply. It’s estimated that there are over 75 to 199 million tonnes of plastic floating in the world’s oceans, with an additional eight million tonnes entering this environment every year.

Plastic cannot be digested by marine animals or plants. When they ingest it by mistake, they suffer from malnutrition and starvation due to their stomachs being filled with indigestible material. This is known as ‘gut fill’ and can lead to death.

Plastic waste also contains harmful chemicals such as BPA (bisphenol A), which have been linked to adverse health effects including cancer. If you think about it, there is something very strange about consuming food that has been contaminated by chemicals that are meant for use in industrial manufacturing processes – this is one more reason why we need to reduce our consumption of plastic!
